A Houstonian since 1960, Dr. Gathe graduated from Baylor College of Medicine with honors in 1981 and was voted into the AA honor society. He completed his internship and residency at Baylor College of Medicine. After which he received the Henri J. Kaiser Merit Scholar Award for outstanding resident over the three years and was chosen as a chief resident at St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital. He completed his Infectious Diseases training at Baylor College of Medicine-The Methodist Hospital. Subsequent highlights have included:

Dr. Gathe actively practices Internal Medicine and general Infectious Diseases both inpatient and outpatient as well as maintaining a Travel Medicine Clinic, but he is probably best known as a national and international thought leader in the care of HIV patients. His experience includes one of the largest active HIV private practices in the United States.
